St Mary's Church, St Mary In The Marsh Church

A Norman church with a heavily buttressed west tower, aisles with separate roof structures and a generously proportioned chancel. The latter contains an excellent small sedilia and double piscina displaying naive little carved faces on its headstops. The Royal Arms are those of George III, and the opening for the rood loft may still be seen. It is a pity that the best Norman work in the building - the tower arch - is now hidden from view, but there is still much of interest. There is no chancel arch - possibly due to a lack of suitable building stone on the Marsh, although there is an indication that some rebuilding has taken place in this part of the church. The narrow nature of the north aisle shows that it was built for processions rather than seating. In the churchyard is the grave of author E.M. Nesbit.
