St Paul's Church, Maidstone Church

This modernist Anglican church was created in 1970 to a design by architect David Evelyn Nye who, along with a large number of religious buildings, was also famous for his cinema architecture. The original St. Paul's church was a Victorian build from 1859 which was gutted beyond repair in 1963 by a large fire. Nye's design was built on the site of St. Paul's Rectory a short distance away. The remains of the old St. Paul's were demolished in 1971 and apartments now stand on the site. Some remnants of the original building can be found in the new church; with the wall behind the altar consisting of re-used stone blocks. The lectern, in the usual shape of a golden eagle, also survived the fire and was reinstalled in the new church. The rest of the furnishings are contemporary. A modern font is positioned in front of a wall with several small rectangular panels of stained-glass, which create beautiful patterns in the church when the sun shines through them. The large coloured canvas painting behind the altar is roughly ten years old and certainly enlivens the interior! The sanctuary area, behind the altar rails, has a large red canopy positioned directly above it: a modern tester perhaps, which was designed to highlight the holiness of the sanctuary area in the absence of a traditional chancel.
