St Mary's Church, Laddingford Church

St. Mary's was built in 1884 as a Mission Church to East Peckham. The adjoining Primary School was built at the same time. The church and school have maintained a shared history which continues to this day. In the week, the church is used as the school hall. It is built to a cruciform pattern with two tiny transepts either side of an apsed chancel. The south transept is used as a small vestry while the north transept contains the piano and the school's TV, which in typical school fashion, rests on a portable trolley! The altar was given in 1909 in memory of Susannah Price, the widow of Reverend John Price who died in 1877 before St. Mary's Mission Church came into being. A plaque on the north wall records that Susannah was instrumental in the building of the church. A curious oddity is the medieval font placed in the south-east corner of the church. Dating from the 14th or 15th century it once contained shields or symbols on its octagonal faces, which were removed during the Reformation. From which church it originated from before being placed at Laddingford is anyone's guess! St. Mary's is not consecrated and not subject to Faculty jurisdiction. Text by Rob Baker
