St Peter's Church, Halfway Church

St. Peter's, at Halfway on the Isle of Sheppey, was used as a daughter church to the historic Abbey Church at nearby Minster. The congregation has met in a number of church buildings over the years but these two remain today. The old brick building was built in 1924-25 with capacity for 100 people. This was superseded in 1973 by a modernist church just across the road designed by architect Cyril P. Griggs. The old church was then kept in use as a church hall.In February 2015 the church was closed and stripped of all its interior furnishings. No services have taken place since. The Church of England still owns the building, but it is now used as a hall by uniformed groups such as the Boy Scouts. Text by Rob Baker
