St Mary's Church, Great Chart Church

church built in 14th century (There was a 12th Cent church here - stonework in vestry door is of this period & whilst village goes back to 7th Cent no mention of a church in Doomsday) major restoration & rebuild in 15th Century by James Goldwell of the Parish (later Bishop of Norwich & buried in a very splended tomb there)possibly after a fire - roof raised to add clearstory windows & rood screen & flat roofs on N & S aisles Victorians re-pewed & restored in 1870s by Blomfield whilst restoring nearby Godinton House we are planning an equally major restoration of re-roofing, replacing stone in window tracery & re-ordering for the 21st Century to include toilets, kitchen & disabled access
