St Luke's Church, Gillingham Church

This large red-bricked Edwardian church was built between 1908 and 1909 to designs by the Cutts Brothers J.E.K. and J.P. (John Edward Knight and John Priston) who were the architects of the similarly designed St. Barnabas church - also in New Brompton - in 1890. The church began as a Mission Hall built in 1892 under the auspices of the parish of St. Mark. It remained in use until the new church was built and now serves as the current church hall. In 1920 architect W.D. (William Douglas) Caroe made some alterations to the west end of the building before the church was joined internally to its now hall (and former church building). Later in the 1920s Edwin Lutyens reordered the sanctuary and was probably responsible for the design of the brickwork on the floor in front of the High Altar - the rope design commemorating the town's maritime heritage. His brother - Canon William Lutyens - was the Vicar between 1914 and 1930. In the Lady Chapel at the end of the north aisle there is a tester/celure over the altar believed to have been designed by Ninian Comper. The stained glass window was gifted by the Guild of Willing Workers in 1919 as a thank offering the commemorate the end of the Great War. Since its creation as a church built for dock workers St. Luke's has maintained an Anglo-Catholic tradition within the Church of England. Text by Rob Baker
