Tucked away from Watling Street, Alban Caroe`s church of 1909 was way ahead of its time. It looks so much of the 1930s, in a Byzantine throwback of brick, stone and tile. The inside is a wonderfully clean-cut affair with tiny transepts and clear windows, and the arcades exaggerated by putting two arches in each tall bay. Strangely the font is tucked in a corner, but then this church was never completed to its original design owing to the First World War and lack of money. In more recent times, in fact in time for its centenary in 2009, extensions have been built to the east to provide more meeting rooms. This is a popular and living church which appreciates its architectural heritage and uses it to benefit its life today.
