St Luke's Church, Chiddingstone Causeway Church

A unique church, designed by John Francis Bentley (1839-1902), architect of the RC Westminster cathedral. A very simple but evocative building of 1897, it is extremely wide for a two-cell church. Bentley was used to designing for the RC liturgy and may have tried slightly too hard when working on this Anglican commission - creating in effect an eighteenth century preaching box in a gothic/arts and crafts type structure. It is possible he didn't fully appreciate what was required and the result is a real oddity - but lovely nonetheless. The panelled walls give the impression of being in a banking hall (Bentley hated brass plaques in churches) with the only real splash of colour coming from the outstanding east window of the Crucifixion.
